What is Yuja?
Yuja (yuzu in Japanese) is a sour, tangerine-sized citrus grown in Korea and Japan. Koreans know it best from yuja tea (yujacha). Most of the fruit's vitamin C is in the peel, which is also rich in flavonoids such as hesperidin. In cosmetics, yuja extract is added to brightening products to help skin look livelier and more even. It is not as strong as a pure vitamin C serum, which is why many formulas pair it with niacinamide or vitamin C derivatives.
How it works
The vitamin C and flavonoids in yuja extract act as antioxidants and may slightly reduce melanin production. Over time this helps dullness and dark spots look less visible.

Frequently asked questions
What does yuja do?
Its antioxidants help dull, tired-looking skin look livelier and make dark spots less visible.
Are yuja and yuzu the same fruit?
Yes. Yuja is the Korean name and yuzu the Japanese one; the botanical name is Citrus junos.
Can it replace a vitamin C serum?
Not entirely. Yuja extract is a gentler brightener. For a stronger effect, combine it with products containing vitamin C or niacinamide.
Can sensitive skin use it?
Most sensitive skin is fine with it. Patch test behind the ear or under the jaw first.
Can I use it during pregnancy?
There is no known concern with topical yuja extract. Ask your doctor if unsure.
