What is Glutathione?
Glutathione is an antioxidant produced naturally in our cells, made of three amino acids (cysteine, glycine and glutamic acid). It is very popular in Asia as a brightening ingredient. There are only a few studies on topical glutathione; in one, a lotion with 2% oxidised glutathione reduced the look of dark spots compared with placebo over 10 weeks. Note: glutathione injections for skin whitening are not an approved treatment, and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has warned that such products may be unsafe.
How it works
Glutathione slows tyrosinase, the enzyme involved in making melanin, and shifts the melanin produced towards a lighter type. As an antioxidant it also fights free radicals from sun and pollution.
Frequently asked questions
Does glutathione lighten skin colour?
Topical glutathione does not change your natural skin colour. It can help dark spots and uneven tone look less visible.
Can I use it with vitamin C?
Yes. Vitamin C helps glutathione return to its active form, and together they give antioxidant support.
When will I see results?
In studies, changes in dark spots appeared after 8 to 10 weeks of regular use combined with sun protection.
Do glutathione pills work?
Most glutathione taken by mouth is broken down during digestion. Studies on its effect on skin are mixed; ask your doctor before taking supplements.
Are glutathione injections safe?
No glutathione injection is approved for skin whitening. Health authorities warn about liver, kidney and nervous-system side effects, and about infection risk when injections are given in non-sterile settings.
