What is Centella Asiatica?

Centella asiatica is a plant that traditional Asian medicine has used for wound healing for centuries. It is also called gotu kola or "tiger grass". Korean cosmetics call it "cica" for short, and you will find it in most products for sensitive skin. Its effects come from madecassoside, asiaticoside, madecassic acid and asiatic acid. Lab work and small clinical studies show that it soothes skin and supports wound healing.

How it works

The triterpenoids in centella reduce the signals that trigger inflammation, gently stimulate collagen-producing cells and help the skin barrier recover. That is why it feels calming on irritated skin or skin that is sensitive after a treatment.

📋 How to use
It can appear at any step, from cleanser to cream, morning and evening. It is fine with retinol, acids and niacinamide, and can help offset the dryness they cause.
⚠️ Side effects and warnings
Generally well tolerated. Allergic reactions are rare; stop using it if you notice itching or redness.

Frequently asked questions

Are cica and centella the same?

Yes. "Cica" is the short name Korean cosmetics use for Centella asiatica.

Which skin types is it for?

All skin types. Sensitive skin, skin that flushes easily and skin recovering after breakouts benefit most.

Does it clear acne?

Not on its own. It can help calm post-acne redness; for active spots, ingredients like salicylic acid work better.

Can I use it on the same night as retinol?

Yes. A moisturiser with centella can help ease the dryness and redness retinol causes.

Can I use it during pregnancy?

There is no known concern with topical centella. We still suggest checking with your doctor before starting any new product while pregnant.
