What is PDRN, and how does it differ from retinol?
K-LAB · 22 Tem 2026
PDRN has become one of the most talked-about ingredients in Korean skincare in recent years. It sits on the same shelf as retinol but does not do the same job. Understanding both makes it easier to build your routine.
What is PDRN?
PDRN stands for polydeoxyribonucleotide: small DNA fragments, usually from salmon or trout. In medicine it is injected to support wound healing; in cosmetics it is added to serums and ampoules to help skin look fresher and more hydrated. A clinic injection and a product you apply at home are not the same thing, and studies on topical products are still few.
What does retinol do?
Retinol is a vitamin A derivative that speeds up skin renewal and helps with fine lines and the look of dark spots. It is effective, but in the first weeks it can cause dryness, flaking and sensitivity, so it is best to start slowly.
The key difference
Retinol pushes skin to renew, while PDRN is used to support its recovery. They are not rivals and can be used together. Rivecowe PDRN Retinol Ampoule combines both with tocopherol (vitamin E) in one formula; the brand recommends it especially for oily skin.
How to start
Start with two evenings a week, watch how your skin reacts for two or three weeks, and increase if all is well. Do not layer it with AHA or BHA acids on the same evening. While you use retinol, wear sunscreen every morning.
Who should be careful?
Do not use retinol products during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and ask your doctor before starting anything new in that period. If you are allergic to fish products, check with your doctor before using PDRN. If you have active eczema, a rosacea flare or fresh sunburn, wait until your skin has calmed down.
