Balm first or foam first?

Water-resistant sunscreen and cushion do not always come off fully with one foam. That is why double cleansing, oil-based first and water-based second, is one of the basic steps of a Korean routine.
Why two steps?
Make-up, sunscreen and sebum dissolve more easily in oil; sweat, dust and water-soluble residue come off with water. An oil-based balm dissolves the first group and a water-based foam cleans away the second. That is why the order matters.
Step 1: balm, on dry skin
Apply the balm to dry skin, not a wet face. About a hazelnut-sized amount is enough; massage in circles for about a minute. Then add a little water with wet fingers: when the balm turns milky, the make-up has dissolved. Rinse well.
Step 2: water-based foam
The second step removes leftover residue and sweat. Lather the foam in your palms, spread it over your face and rinse without leaving it on for long. Use lukewarm, not hot water; hot water can dry skin out and make it feel tight after cleansing.
One step is enough in the morning
Overnight there is no layer of make-up or sunscreen to dissolve. In the morning, a single water-based cleanse is enough for most skin types. Cleansing more than needed dries skin out and strains the barrier.
What to watch for on sensitive skin
On irritated skin, keep the massage short and pat your face dry instead of rubbing it with a towel. Choose a gentle foam and apply moisturiser soon after cleansing.
